In general, to golf course architects have their own construction team/equipment?

Or do they hire a local company based on the location

  1. Architects who are responsible for building the course as well as its design usually have a basic crew which handles the equipment, the shapers and earth movers needed to sculpture the course and its layout. Most of the equipment will be rented from companies near the sight rather than owning and dragging equipment all over the country.

  2. Some do both. Tom Doak has a crew, but has also hired local college students (majoring in fields similar to the project) to do some work in the past. Most have their own crews, however.

  3. Just keep in mind that there is a difference between a golf course architect and golf course construction, much as there is a difference when building a new structure. The architect designs the facility, then the owner will hire a construction company to build it. Then what usually happens in the case of golf courses, the architect will visit fairly regularly to the site and monitor that the integrity of the design is being followed.

Note also, there are now companies that do comprehensive total planning, construction management, (but the contractor is still usually local), and even operations and maintenance management.

In answer to your question specifically, usually but not always, the architect is NOT the builder and does not have have their own equipment.
