Get a quality used set. Look in the classified ads in the local newspaper or try a pro-shop. You don’t need a full set either. One and three wood, 3, 5, 7, 9, PW and putter is fine for starters. Do get a glove and golf shoes.
Try that for awhile until you are sure you are into it.

GO TO A DISCOUNT STORE, LIKE WAL-MART… BUY A STARTER SET OF CLUBS… THE BRAND DOESN’T MATTER… GO OUT TO A DRIVING RANGE, TAKE LESSONS IF YOU WOULD LIKE, OR GET BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY… LEARN THE GAME AND WHEN YOU ARE SURE IT’S FOR YOU THEN BUY A NAMED BRAND SET OF CLUBS (ALL 14). YOU KNOW HOW MUCH YOU CAN AFFORD… MOST OF ALL HAVE FUN…

You’d have to customize… without it you’ll just be buying something off the rack without really finding out which is best for you… There’ll be questions like would it be graphite or steel shafts? Blades or just plain irons? 460cc or smaller Driver heads? Better to consult your Golf Equipment Pro than be stuck with a mediocre beginner’s equipment worst at the driving range all day…
